<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 28-year-old signed on a loan deal until the end of the season on transfer deadline day.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And now the prerequisite paperwork has been completed to allow Doumbia to make his Premier League debut against Everton at Goodison Park.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But having only arrived at Newcastle on Monday morning, it is likely that Steve McClaren will name the striker on the bench as opposed to thrusting him straight into the starting line-up.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Ivorian has not played competitive football since his last Champions League appearance for CSKA Moscow where he had returned after an unsuccessful £11million move to Roma.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But now Doumbia has put pen to paper on a temporary deal with Newcastle which will cost the club £500,000 but there is <a href="http://newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/2016/02/revealed-why-newcastle-could-end-up.html" rel="tag" target="_blank">an option in the deal to make his switch a permanent one for a reported £10m</a>.</div>

Newcastle are closing in on the £7million signing of Swansea striker Bafetimbi Gomis, according to reports. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 30-year-old French striker is said to be unsettled in Wales and is keen on a move away from the Liberty Stadium. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And French website <em>Get French Football News</em> claim both clubs have come to an agreement on the player's contract length after <a href="http://newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/2016/01/newcastle-close-in-on-7m-deal-to-sign.html" rel="tag" target="_blank">negotiations moved in a positive direction</a>.</div>

Newcastle have reportedly <a href="http://newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/2016/01/arsenal-and-newcastle-make-enquiry-for.html" rel="tag" target="_blank">enquired about the availability of Roma striker Seydou Doumbia</a>. </div>

Italian newspaper <em>II Messaggero</em> claim Roma are keen to offload the player before the transfer window closes. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And the Magpies are hoping to secure a deal for the forward. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Newcastle are close to completing a deal to sign Atletico Madrid left-back Guilherme Siqueira, according to reports. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 29-year-old has fallen down the pecking order since Atletico resigned Filipe Luis from Chelsea last summer. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And <em>Sky Sports</em> claim the Brazilian is close to completing a loan move to Newcastle until the end of the season.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Siqueira has made just seven appearances for Diego Simeone's side this season. </div>

Mitrovic has been a figure of controversy since his £13million move to <a href="http://www.newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Newcastle%20United" rel="tag" target="_blank">Newcastle</a> last summer, getting booked 22 seconds into his debut before receiving his first red card against <a href="http://www.newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Arsenal" rel="tag" target="_blank">Arsenal</a> in only his second start.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And now former Partizan Belgrade captain Albert Nadj has revealed Mitrovic's £3.7m move to Belgium in 2013 was given some unusual encouragement.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mitrovic senior worked on transfer deals for the club until recently and was keen to ensure his son made the move to Belgium.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"In a generation with Lazar Markovic, [Nikola] Ninkovic and Luka Stojanovic, he [Mitrovic] was nowhere near Partizan's youth team," Nadj told <a href="http://sport.blic.rs/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><em>Blic</em></a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"The club wanted to get rid of him, so he went to Teleoptik, and soon after some big clubs were chasing him and he moved to Anderlecht for €5m. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"I was against his transfer; I believed he should have stayed and improved more at Partizan and that Partizan could earn even more from his transfer. </div>

Thauvin's nightmare spell finally set to end</h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Florian Thauvin will finally be allowed to move back to Marseille, according to reports.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 23-year-old completed a £12million move from France to the north east last summer with Remy Cabella going on loan in the other direction.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But Thauvin has made just 13 Premier League appearances, ten from the bench, and has failed to make an impression on manager Steven McClaren.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And with the move for winger Andros Townsend all but complete, French newspaper <em>Le Parisien</em> are <a href="http://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2016/newcastle-agree-to-let-florian-thauvin-leave-on-loan/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">claiming</a> McClaren is now happy to let Thauvin return to the south of France.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The deal had been mooted earlier in the month but Newcastle wanted to include an obligatory buy option in the deal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But with Townsend heading north the Magpies have relaxed their demands and Thauvin will get the chance to move.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
And with just eight goals in 28 games for the club, both Aston Villa and Newcastle have shown an interest in signing the player.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But McClaren's search for a striker may have to turn elsewhere as Premier League leaders Leicester have made a bid for him.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, Remy would be competing with Shinji Okazaki, Jamie Vardy and Leonardo Ulloa meaning Newcastle may be able to offer him greater opportunity.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<em>News News Blog Sport</em> understands a <a href="http://newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/2016/01/transfer-news-spurs-accept-newcastle.html" rel="tag" target="_blank">£10.5million bid was yesterday accepted by Spurs</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy had been holding out for £14m and was reportedly refusing to budge from that figure.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But <em>The Guardian</em> claim <a href="http://newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/2016/01/newcastle-target-andros-townsend-may.html" rel="tag" target="_blank">Pochettino</a> personally requested the club accept Newcastle's offer, which gives him time and resources to find a replacement.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The manager remains keen on landing a forward before the transfer window closes, with West Brom's Saido Berahino on his wish list.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Townsend even reportedly rejected a move to the Hawthorns as part of a cash-plus-player deal that would have seen Berahino join Spurs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 24-year-old has been frozen out of the Tottenham squad and has not played for the first team since last October.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He is desperate for games in order to earn a place in Roy Hodgson's England squad for Euro 2016.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Pochettino is said to have been impressed with his attitude while playing for the Under 21s and that his request to let Townsend leave is a final goodwill gesture.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is claimed the switch should be completed within the next 48 hours.</div>

<strong>Townsend nears Spurs exit</strong></h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Newcastle will look to continue their January spending spree by making a £14million offer for unwanted Tottenham winger Andros Townsend, according to reports.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Magpies have already landed Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea for £12m, as well Bordeaux ace Henri Saivet in a £4.5m deal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And <em>The London Evening Standard</em> claim Newcastle <a href="http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/andros-townsend-to-newcastle-magpies-ready-to-increase-offer-after-tottenham-reject-105m-approach-a3158891.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">have had a £10.5m offer for 24-year-old Townsend rejected</a> by Spurs.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But Newcastle manager Steve McClaren is determined to get his man and will make an increased offer before January is out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is claimed Spurs are keen to offload England international Townsend - but only at the right price.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He has not featured for manager Mauricio Pochettino since October and risks missing out on England selection for Euro 2016 unless he gets game time under his belt.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>£7m enough to land Gomis</strong></h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Newcastle are also said to be keen on landing <a href="http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/newcastle-united-fc-linked-move-10746612" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Swansea striker Bafetimbi Gomis</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 30-year-old is thought to be nearing an exit from the Liberty Stadium club after failing to fill departed ace Wilfried Bony's boots up front.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Swansea have scored just 19 goals all season in the league and are in a relegation scrap with Newcastle.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Toon are reportedly considering an offer for Frenchman Gomis in an effort to bolster their attacking unit, which has Papiss Cisse absent through injury.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<em>Wales Online</em> claim Gomis is also being tracked by clubs in the Middle East, with Swansea wanting around £7m for the forward.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Sissoko going nowhere</strong></h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While McClaren seeks new recruits this January he is also reportedly keen to retain the players he's already got.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
According to Italian newspaper <em>Gazzetta dello Sport</em>, <a href="http://gazzettaworld.gazzetta.it/news/transfer-market/napoli-newcastle-midfielder/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Napoli target Moussa Sissoko</a> won't be allowed to leave St James' Park unless the Serie A giants match Newcastle's valuation of just under £27m.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was thought Napoli were considering a £12m offer for French midfielder Sissoko - but Newcastle want more than double that for the 27-year-old.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Napoli are seeking a first Serie A title since 1990 and sit two points ahead of defending champions Juventus at the top of the table.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gazzetta claim that while they are unwilling to match Newcastle's valuation, officials in Naples are confident of negotiating the fee down to an affordable level.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Debutant Shelvey (left) celebrates Wijnaldum's strike at St James' Park</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
The England midfielder, whose attitude has been questioned by some – among them Toon legend Alan Shearer – celebrated his Magpies debut after his £12million move from Swansea by playing a part in two goals in the first 15 minutes. </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Ayoze Perez gave Newcastle a sixth-minute lead and Georginio Wijnaldum grabbed his ninth goal for the club. </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
West Ham’s half-time substitute Nikica Jelavic struck only four minutes after his introduction, but their eight-match unbeaten league run is over. </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
It was long-overdue revenge for Newcastle boss Steve McClaren over opposite number Slaven Bilic. The West Ham boss was in charge of Croatia when they dumped McClaren’s England out of qualifying for Euro 2008.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
And McClaren was delighted with the win and Shelvey’s display. He said: “You always worry with the first game, whether a player will blend in.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
"I thought the balance was perfect and that first pass forward created the first goal and the crossfield pass for the second, the speed of it gives you that extra two seconds so the defence can’t recover. </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
“That’s the difference between top-quality midfielders and average ones. He has the potential to be top class but he has a long way to go.’’ </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Shelvey said: “This was not about me, but a great win for the team. I thought we were really outstanding, especially in the first half. It’s often hard at first when you move clubs, but our players made it easy for me.’’ </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
It wasn’t all positive for the new man though. Shelvey was at the centre of a flashpoint shortly before half-time when he raised his arm as he blocked off Hammers striker Enner Valencia. </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Referee Neil Swarbrick, who had a clear view of the incident, took no further action. </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
McClaren said: “It was handbags. It was shoulder-to-shoulder – he couldn’t move Jonjo. Let’s talk about the game and not stupid little incidents.” </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Shelvey, an ex-Hammers youth player and boyhood fan, made an immediate impression. It was his ball into the feet of Wijnaldum, whose lay-off presented Perez with the chance to curl his finish inside Adrian’s left-hand post. </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Aleksandar Mitrovic almost doubled the lead a minute later when he arrowed an angled effort that Adrian tipped over. </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
But Shelvey sprayed a glorious ball out to Daryl Janmaat and the right-back centred for fellow Dutchman Wijnaldum to beat the keeper from no more than six yards. </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Newcastle, who also handed a debut to new £4.5m Senegal midfielder Henri Saivet as a second-half sub, saw Adrian deny Mitrovic on three more occasions, but needed keeper Rob Elliot to make a vital late block. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Bilic said: “That wasn’t good enough from us. Nobody played well in the first half – we should have started with more confidence than them.”</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">

But when Tottenham came in with a bid last summer Berahino submitted a transfer request to join the Champions League contenders which was promptly rejected by chairman Jeremy Peace.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><div align="justify">
Jonjo Shelvey and Rob Elliot are friends who go back to their days at Charlton</div>
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 23-year-old <a href="http://newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/2016/01/confirmed-newcastle-united-complete.html" rel="tag" target="_blank">completed</a> his £12million move to St James' Park on Tuesday to become Steve McClaren's second signing of the January transfer window.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Rob Elliot previously played alongside Shelvey at Charlton and is currently <a href="http://www.newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Newcastle%20United" rel="tag" target="_blank">Newcastle's</a> first-choice goalkeeper with Tim Krul out injured.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And Elliot has revealed that Shelvey could have gone elsewhere.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"We have Jonjo coming into to add quality to midfield," he <a href="http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-united-new-boy-jonjo-10730346" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">said</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"We can only expect good things. He’s class.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“To put it into perspective he came into our team at 16-years-old at Charlton, and you’d have thought he was 28. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"I am so excited he’s signed. He’s not only a great lad but he’s a winner.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“OK, he might go over the top a little bit but that’s what the fans love. He just wants to play. He had a lot of options to go to clubs.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Crystal Palace's Alan Pardew was reportedly one of the managers interested in picking up the midfielder when it became clear Swansea would be willing to let him go.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But Elliot claims the pull of a club the size of Newcastle was too great for the England international to resist.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"He turned down a couple of clubs where he could have lived at home," Elliot added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“So that shows what he thinks of Newcastle as a club and what he thinks of the stadium. He said to me he thought Newcastle was a big club.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“No matter what the outside world thinks of Newcastle you should come here and see the passion of 50,000.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He watched his first game from the stands against Man United. Why wouldn’t you want to play for Newcastle?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“So hopefully, it will be great for everybody moving forward.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Shelvey joins a Newcastle side staring down the barrel of another relegation battle as they sit 19th in the Premier League table.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, they are just a point behind Shelvey's old club Swansea and safety from the drop.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And Eliiot reckons the former <a href="http://www.newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Liverpool" rel="tag" target="_blank">Liverpool</a> midfielder will add plenty of passion to excite the famous crowd in the north east.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Jonjo wears his heart on his sleeve and is a proper Essex boy," he added.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He has a pure desire to play football and doesn’t care about anything else. So he will fit in really well up here, the fans will love him.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“The only thing I’d say is that he’s still 23 so it could be a bit of patience with him.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“All players need time. Hopefully, he settles in straight away. He’s a top man.”</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fletcher is likely to leave Sunderland but the question remains exactly where or when</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 28-year-old cost <a href="http://www.newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Sunderland" rel="tag" target="_blank">Sunderland</a> £12million in 2012 but his contract expires at the end of the season and he has yet to sign a renewal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And now the <em>Sunderland Echo</em> are <a href="http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/newcastle-united-new-boy-jonjo-10730346" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">claiming</a> that Scottish champions Celtic are lining up a move to sign the striker on a Bosman deal when his contract is up.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fletcher has been linked with a surprise move to China where Shanghai Senhua are targeting him along with former <a href="http://www.newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Chelsea" rel="tag" target="_blank">Chelsea</a> striker Demba Ba and <a href="http://www.newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Newcastle%20United" rel="tag" target="_blank">Newcastle</a> midfielder Cheik Tiote.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But Celtic re-entering the race for Fletcher after failing to close a deal for him on the summer has reportedly made the Glasgow club favourites to secure the player and bring him back to Scotland.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fletcher started his career north of the border in Edinburgh with Hibernian until moving south to Burnley at the age of 22.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Clarets were relegated in his first season at the club but he stayed in the Premier League by signing for Wolves before leaving again when they were relegated two years later. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And after racking up 11 goals in his first season at the Stadium of Light, he has managed just 12 more since in two-and-a-half years.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sam Allardyce now looks set to let the striker go having signed Dame N'Doye as a potential replacement, but whether he will cash in during January or allow the Scot to leave for free in the summer remains to be seen.</div>

The 27-year-old now plies his trade in Spain for Espanyol but spent three years at <a href="http://www.newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Manchester%20City" rel="tag" target="_blank">Manchester City</a> before leaving for Lokomotiv Moscow in 2011 after a succession of loan spells.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And now the Ecuadorian is on the radar of both <a href="http://www.newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Everton" rel="tag" target="_blank">Everton</a> and <a href="http://www.newsnewsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Newcastle%20United" rel="tag" target="_blank">Newcastle</a>, claim Spanish outlet <a href="http://www.fichajes.com/breves/espanyol-la-premier-acecha-a-felipe-caicedo_98683" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><em>Fichajes</em></a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Caicedo is Espanyol's top-scorer this season with five goals in La Liga but Constantin Galca's side are still struggling in 13th place.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The former City man is also currently top-scorer in South America's World Cup qualification with four goals in Ecuador's first four games.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
His form has not gone unnoticed as Premier League clubs apparently consider the possibility of bringing him back to England.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Newcastle have already been one of the January transfer window's most active clubs having signed Jonjo Shelvey for £12million yesterday, but Steve McClaren is keen on adding another striker to his squad.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Caicedo's versatility makes him an especially attractive prospect to Everton who look likely to let Steven Naismith leave before the end of the transfer window.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And while the Espanyol forward is unlikely to displace red-hot Romelu Lukaku, his ability to play on either flank could make him a helpful utility player in Roberto Martinez's squad.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Steve McClaren's Newcastle side have now lost four games in a row in all competitions</td></tr>

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
The bitterly unpopular sports shop tycoon was their No 1 target after another disappointing day for them in a season that gets worse by the week.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Chants of "you Cockney b.....d get out of our home" were followed by "we're s..t and we're sick of it" echoed around Vicarage Road as the visitors' frustrations erupted.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
You could hardly blame. They had paid good money and travelled in numbers to see a side that flattered to deceive and now has nothing more than survival to look forward to.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
But at least they couldn't accuse Steve McClaren of not embracing the so called magic of the cup. If Jack Colback hadn't been injured Newcastle would have been at full strength.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
To be honest, what little magic there was on show to start with came from the Geordies.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
They would have been at least two up in the first half hour if it hadn't been for the reactions of Heurelho Gomes and a glorious chance that Ayoze Perez wasted.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
With a gusty wind at their backs Watford really ought to have been doing better.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
But then a less than magical wayward pass by Georgino Wijnaldum turned the first half on its head and gifted them a half time lead they definitely didn't deserve.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Skipper Troy Deeney was left in oceans of space and duly bagged his seventh goal of the season, calmly plonking the ball into an empty net after rounding the stranded Rob Elliot.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
Not so much magic, though. More like luck on a plate.</div>

There wasn't a lot of difference after the break either. Moussa Sissoko was desperately unlucky to get his feet in a tangle after a great run that deserved better.</div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: justify;">
But generally speaking his teammates left their shooting boots at home and when they did get anywhere near that man Gomes was always in the way.</div>

Steve McClaren insists Newcastle do not fear Arsenal ahead of today’s Premier League clash at the Emirates.</div>

<a href="http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/steve-mcclaren-says-newcastle-united-10674513" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Newcastle</a> are winless in three games heading into today’s 3pm kick off and have lost their last eight encounters with the Gunners.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They currently sit 18th in the table - two points from safety - but manager McClaren says his side can cause an upset this afternoon.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We have gone to places like Old Trafford and White Hart Lane and shown we can compete. That’s what we want to do,” he told the <em>Newcastle</em> <em>Chronicle</em>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It’s what we have been doing over the last 11 games, apart from Leicester and Crystal Palace. We have been competing and you can’t fault the players for that.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“We have been unlucky in the last three games and we are hoping in 2016 that turns a bit.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he has given Mesut <a href="http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/mesut-ozil-being-rested-between-matches-to-preserve-fitness-for-arsenal-title-charge-a3146811.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ozil</a> additional rest time over recent weeks.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ozil has hit top form for Arsenal this season and is set to start against Newcastle today.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Germany World Cup winner boasts 16 assists and three goals for the season and Wenger revealed how he has managed the player’s busy workload.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“I gave Mesut a one-week holiday during the international break,” Wenger said. “At the moment he doesn't practice a lot, we rest him a lot between the games.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“He is a guy who, once the basic fitness is there between the games, he wants to play. There are types of players, sometimes the most technical players, it looks like it demands less energy for them to play - it is just natural for them…</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“You also look at the impact Ozil can have on other players. The Premier League is very tight and if you go into the decisive game and [rest Ozil or other key players], the other players think subconsciously ‘Why?’, and even the player himself.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In transfer news, Wenger appears ready to do a U-turn on former player Oguzhan <a href="http://www.fanatik.com.tr/2016/01/01/biri-oguzhani-gozetliyor-639456" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ozyakup</a> and bring him back to the club.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ozyakup, 23, ended a four-year spell in Arsenal’s youth team when he switched to Besiktas in 2012.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He has gone on to earn 15 caps for Turkey and his five goals have helped Besiktas to the top of the Turkish Super Lig.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And his performances have caught the eye of Arsenal who, according to Turkish outlet <em>Fanatik</em>, are preparing a summer bid for the midfielder.</div>
